McDonald's Twitter Failure
26/01/2012
McDonald's #MCDStories campaign backfired quickly when it became hijacked by animal rights group PETA and Twitter users expressing horror stories of there experiences at the fast food giant.
The fast food chain sent out two tweets featuring the #MCDStories and within minutes the hash tag was trending but for all the wrong reasons.
@jfsmith23 wrote, ‘Watching a classmate projectile vomit his food all over the restaurant during a 6th grade trip,’ and one of the worst, @MuzzaFuzza who wrote, ‘I havent been to McDonald's in years, because Id rather eat my own diarrhoea’.
McDonald's last week launched the #MeetTheFarmers hash-tag which featured wholesome stories about farmers which was a success.
The campaign featured paid-for tweets which allowed there tweets to appear at the top of search results.
McDonald's Social Media Director, Rick Won has said, ‘Within an hour, we saw that it wasn't going as planned… It was negative enough that we set about a change of course.’
