research by Experian Hitwise, showed that VAT going back to 17.5% caused a 54% increase in related search terms. As UK VAT rates returned to 17.5% as of January 1st, last week saw a 50% rise on terms such 'VAT increase 2010', 'VAT rate change' and 'when does VAT go back to 17.5%'. The VAT increase saw a surge the previous week to retail websites as consumers made the most of the 15% VAT while it lasted. The retailers, who benefited from the surge, were the home and garden sector, which had a 67% increase in traffic between December 21st and January 2nd when compared to the previous year.
