Twitter Rises Up The Ranks

23/06/2009

New figures have been released by Hitwise about Twitter, revealing it as the 38th most visited website in the UK. Twitter traffic has increased more than 22 times in the last year which has raised its profile by 931 places in the most visited list of websites in the UK.

The social networking site has now become the fifth most-visited social networking site from 84th in the previous year.

Twitter has also had a significant impact on traffic to other sites; it is now the 30th biggest source of traffic for other sites, with one of every 350 visits to a website in the UK happening as a result of Twitter. 55.9% of this traffic goes to other content driven online media sites, for example, social networking sites, blogs, and news and entertainment websites. Whereas only 9.5% of Twitter’s downstream traffic is to transactional website, like travel, business and finance sites.

This is quite a significant difference when compared to Google UK, which sends 30.7% of it’s traffic to transactional sites, and Facebook sending 14.7% of traffic.
