"A typical day starts around 8.15 with the screening of CVs and interviewing of suitable candidates from adverts posted on various job-boards. I cover the SEO market across the UK so I am always on the lookout for talented people who I can put forward to my clients. Because I have built up a strong reputation within the industry, I also receive a number of recommendations daily, so marketing these people to my clients quickly is essential. Without an established relationship with these companies, exerting influence over who they interview would be difficult. However, over the past 12 months, I have forged strong links with these firms and as result they often interview my candidates purely on my recommendation.
Once I have arranged who my clients wish to interview, I begin looking for new business. I typically spend 10.00 until 12.00 cold-calling companies as well as contacting old clients. This is to establish fresh, working relationships; qualify recruitment needs and pro-actively market any particularly strong candidates I have on my books. With new clients, I am also responsible for agreeing Terms of Business.
From 12.00 until 13.00 I arrange and confirm my interviews gained that morning.
At 14.00 I spend an hour taking references on the candidates I have registered that week. This allows me to qualify the candidate's track record and gives me more information in order to promote the candidate to my clients.
After all references have been taken I will continue with business calls for another couple of hours. I will typically be making 15 calls an hour.
At 17.00 I will catch up on admin from the afternoon. This includes arranging client meetings, adding new contacts to the database and sending out interview confirmation letters. I will also post adverts specifically aimed at any new live jobs from today.
17.30 onwards is spent searching CVs and preparing candidates for tomorrow’s interviews. I will check job boards, network and go over older CVs from our company database. I will often be in the office until 19.00 as this is generally the best time to get hold of candidates. The job is most certainly not 9-5, but then I wouldn’t expect to be able to earn £70,000 per annum if it was !”
